Announced/Explained/Decided:

1. Bob will distribute the sign-up sheet from the 1/14/10 meeting–serves as a contact list.

2. Ed and zoho web site-related questions: can be set up so that (a) anyone, anywhere can read what’s posted; (b) we can specify who can edit official committee postings; (c) anyone can leave comments. At present, Ed is the only one who can give access to restricted pages. What is open to the world? Only the homepage which will have links. As set up now, the default situation is “restricted unless/until restriction lifted.”

3. Sustainability Committee will meet: 1st Tuesday of the month at 12:15 p.m. (next meeting on February 2 at 12:15), and 3rd Thursday of the month at 11:00 a.m. in OSC 207 unless otherwise announced.

Subcommittees (chair)

1. Alternative Energy (Bob): any matter that will make campus buildings energy efficient

2. Earth Day (Carol) Plan and arrange for (a) getting participants; (b) campus location(s) for the exhibits, activities, etc., (c) tents and sound system(s) as needed; (d) liaising with ASKCC committee(s).

Reported by Moksha: There is an 8-member committee of Student Council members which will spearhead getting a band, and making available food and utensils that are in line with the Earth Day-sustainability theme. At present Moksha is the liaison between the 2 committees.

Colleen: blueplanet.org site for information re: money available for student projects for Earth Day.

3. Sustainability Planning (Moksha) Establish guidelines for KCC, as an institution, to operate in a sustainable manner, e.g., purchases or equipment and materials, energy use, recycling/reducing/

4. Zero-Waste (Jimmy); members: Colleen, Joshua, Anne, Glenn, Linda Sciaroni, Billy Ortiz)

Reported by Jimmy: Waiting for Calvin Shirai to complete applications to obtain blue bins for recycling from the county. Possible composting area would be acreage set aside for lo’i–Joshua. Committee’s next meeting will have John Harder attending. Gordon Betz of the Surf Rider Foundation willing to speak at KCC–possibly on Earth Day?

Submitted by Joyce Nakahara

Addendum. The first Sustainability Committee meeting was held on January 14, 2010. Almost all of the hour was spent talking about Earth Day, April 22, a Thursday. Discussed were (a) location: by the gazebo with a band with perhaps food being sold and booths whose topics would be conducive to being displayed here, plus the “Arts quad” where it was held last year; (b) food to be sold; (c) vendors–KCC should receive a fee for allowing vendors at the event; who will decide which vendors to allow? (c) publicizing the event and highlighting KCC sustainability activities. Posters showing visions for a sustainable campus. “How Would You Green the Campus?” could be the theme. This suggestion that students produce posters touting sustainability was well received. These could be hung around the campus for awhile. Posters/photos showing faculty involved in on campus and off campus sustainability activities. One suggestion: tours of the campus to show sustainability actions, e.g., the Farm, the demo windmill by the trades buildings, the solar panels being installed on OSC roof. It was decided that at the next meeting, the focus will be on subcommittees and campus sustainability in general.
